EPA 608 · Handling refrigerant

Studying for your EPA 608 certification?

Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, you must be EPA-certified to buy and handle refrigerant. There are four levels — Core (everyone takes it), plus Type I (small appliances), Type II (high-pressure systems), and Type III (low-pressure). Pass Core plus all three and you're Universal.

The Refrigeration Core class builds the knowledge the 608 exam leans on — the refrigeration cycle, refrigerants, recovery, charging, and the components. It's a strong foundation, but be clear: it is not the official exam and does not certify you. You take the real 608 exam through an EPA-approved certifying organization. Start at the EPA's official page: epa.gov/section608.
